Ta Phrom (2 of 3) - Angkor City, Cambodia

Coexisting? (92k)

Banyan, fig, and silk cotton trees dominate this large, 12th century Buddhist temple. Here a giant silk-cotton tree is being strangled by a fig tree.

Huge Tree Roots  (68k)

This popular photo setting makes the fate awaiting Ta Phrom obvious. Stone walls are just no match for this silk-cotton tree.

Trees Thriving  (84k)

Trees like this are destroying the walkways and walls. But paradoxically they are now holding together some sections.

Ruins  (88k)

No reconstructive work was done on the structures here, or at least in the past several centuries. French and Japanese teams have restored many area sites, but this is just as it was found.

Walk Carefully  (88k)

Obviously Ta Phrom remains fairly unchanged from the way it was when re-discovered after WWII. Some of these trees are thought to be 600 years old.

Remains of Wall  (80k)

A crack can be seen where the entrance is being split off from the walkway. This is part of the appeal of Ta Phrom. Don't walk too close!
